THE KING WHO WASHED THE TRAITOR’S FEET

line

The Lord and His disciples in an upper room one night
Had supped together. As they lingered there
The Lord arose and quietly began to wash their feet
And showed His gracious love and gentle care.

His humble act of service, an example to His own,
Contained no gesture that would signify
That among them sat a traitor waiting to betray the Lord
To those who would deliver Him to die.

As Jesus moved among them and knelt down before each man,
He worked in humble selflessness complete.
There was no change of manner as He came to Judas’ place
And meekly knelt to wash the traitor’s feet.

He knew the heart of Judas; forever He had known
The one who, selfish greed to satisfy,
Would turn Him in for silver. Yet the Master never showed
By angry look or fearsome glint of eye

That Judas was the traitor. The others did not know
Which one would give their Master up to die.
When Christ spoke of betrayal, each one questioned soberly
In fearful, trembling voice, "Lord, is it I?"

Such love beyond all reason! To serve the one who would
Betray Him to His enemies for gain.
But that is Jesus’ spirit. His sweet love is ever pure.
In spite of sin, His grace will ever reign.

So we should love each other and strive as He gives strength
To serve in love and graciousness complete.
For He is our example, and we must all remember
We serve the King Who washed the traitor’s feet.
