IN EARLY MAY

line

In early May, the mem'ries cloud my mind:
Remembrance of my father's final day,
On earth, awakes anew the ache of grief
Begun those years ago in early May.

Another mem'ry comes to trouble me
And wakes another hurt on Mother's Day,
When wishing I could see my mother's smile
Gives rise to grieving tears once more in May;

Then longing for the child I never bore
And missing my heart's child, now far away,
And her own babes and husband, dear ones, too,
Add to the sorrow of this special Day.

Then once again, I feel my husband's love;
His smile, his patient strength help to allay
The pain. He prays for me until I know
Our Lord will comfort me in early May.
