VOICE OF SPRING

line

Nature teases.
Trees are leafing.
Flowers are blooming.
Fruit trees are blossoming.
Children are reveling in the warm day sun.

Night comes.
The temperature drops to cold.
Warmth grows from the glow of rekindled coals.
Chills of morning rise from frost below.
Children shiver into fleeces and flannels.

Winter lingers.
Yet, days thaw to mild.
The soil warms.
Farmers plow and plant.
Children yearn for summer holidays.

April flourishes.
Warmth lingers into evening.
The sun sets, leaving mauve-tinted trails.
Then, for the first time this season, the whippoorwill calls.
His voice is singular, but not lonesome,
As he delivers his welcome message.

"Spring is here!"
