UNWELCOME VISITORS

line

I heard insistent knocking at my door.
I looked and saw the visitor was Fear.
I reached to bar the door to keep him out,
And called to him, "You are not welcome here."

He laughed at me and then more loudly knocked.
He said, "You cannot win. My friends are here."
Through darkened glass, I saw that at my door
Stress, Worry, Dread, and Doubt now stood with Fear.

"We heard the news," they cried. "You'll let us in!"
Their harsh and jeering laughter chilled my soul.
I knew I must have help to face this fight,
Or I would drown in terror dark and cold.

A gentle Voice said, "You have heard My Word.
"My child, be not afraid. You must believe
"That I am on your side. I walk with you
"To keep your soul from harm, your hurts relieve."

The peace that filled my heart brought victory.
I called out through the door, "I'm not alone.
"Now Jesus stands with me. He is your foe."
Then I looked out. My visitors were gone!
