In the meantime, the two little wandering Wondernells had finished their lunch. Nick stood and wiped his hands on his breeches legs. "Let's go, Penny. We'll have to hurry if we reach Cold and Dank Cove before dark."

"Nick, I'm scared. I don't want to go on. Let Snivvely have the Star Clock. I don't care. Just let's go home. Nick, please!" Penny burst into tears. "I want Mother and Father. Please! Let's go home."

He shook his head firmly. "No. We must go on, Penny. If we don't, there will be no Christmas. We must get the Star Clock back from Snivvely Wivvels. We must teach him a lesson. Come on, Penny. Let's go."

Still sniffling, Penny stood and brushed the dried leaf bits from her clothes. "0. K." she mumbled.

Taking his sister's hand, Nick led her onto the Forest Waterfall Pathway, and they continued their journey along the bank of the Sunshine Sparkle River.

Sometime later, they heard a faint roaring in the distance. Penny grabbed Nick's arm. "What's that?"

He patted her hand. "I think it's the sound of Rainbow Waterfalls. We must be getting close to them."

Penny trembled, but said nothing. They began walking again.

Suddenly Nick said, "Penny, do you smell something? Smells like a just-struck match."

Penny nodded.

They looked around them carefully. Seeing nothing, they continued their journey.

About ten minutes later, both little Wondernells felt their skin begin to prickle. In a few seconds, they became aware of a sound of muffled laughter.

"Who's that, Nick?" Penny whispered.

"I don't know," he whispered back, "but it's not funny laughing. It's scary laughing." They began to run. No matter how fast they ran or how far, they never outdistanced the laughter which grew neither louder nor fainter, just the same muffled undertone.
